Since 2008, Alberta Education has launched five major initiatives that aim to transform Alberta's education system to meet the needs of today's students. Thousands of Albertans participated in a wide array of consultation processes, bringing the voice of students, parents, service providers and educators to the forefront. Inspiring Action Inspiring Action on Education is a discussion paper that describes how Alberta's education system might address the steps outlined in Inspiring Education: A Dialogue with Albertans, Setting the Direction for the Future of Special Education in Alberta, and Speak Out: The Alberta Student Engagement Initiative.

Inspiring Education: A Dialogue with Albertans Released by the 22-member Steering Committee of Inspiring Education: A Dialogue with Albertans, the Inspiring Education report outlines high-level direction and a vision for education over the next 20 years. Approximately 4,000 Albertans participated in this unique public engagement project last year through facilitated community sessions, a conversation kit, a provincial forum and various social media tools.

Speak Out Forums - A Year in Review Since the November 2008 launch of Speak Out - the Alberta Student Engagement Initiative, Alberta Education has worked with thousands of students online and in person to gain an understanding of their learning needs. The Year in Review for 2009-2010 summarizes the activities and the student voice from the second year of the project's implementation.

Setting the Direction Setting the Direction was a provincial initiative designed to create a new framework to ensure Alberta students with special education needs have the supports they need to be successful. The project featured province-wide consultations that resulted in the development of a new vision and principles, policy, accountability and funding.

Proposed Revisons to School Act The last major revision to the School Act occurred in 1988, and provided the legislative foundation for Alberta’s education system for more than twenty years. In 2009, the Minister of Education, Honourable Dave Hancock, launched a review of the School Act in order to proactively prepare for the outcomes of the various public engagement initiatives described in Inspiring Action.
