Airdrie RCMP and Airdrie Fire Department Warn of Thinning Ice

Airdrie is finally starting to see warmer temperatures and with that comes melting ice on ponds, creeks, and canals.

As the temperatures warm, ice in and around Airdrie will begin to melt and weaken posing a possible danger. Children will continue to be attracted to these ice surfaces and police and fire officials want to remind parents to please have a safety talk with their children about ice and water safety.

Storm water ponds and natural waterways are unpredictable and dangerous due to their varying depths and size. The chemicals and substances in the water such as silt and salt common in these run off canals affect how ice freezes. With the fluctuating temperatures, ice can weaken even as it retains its thickness. Please do not go onto these ice surfaces and keep pets on a leash if walking nearby. This prevents them from going on the ice and falling through.
