Airdrie RCMP Issue School Zone Traffic Safety Tips

For Immediate Release - February 12, 2018

Airdrie, Alberta- Airdrie RCMP would like to remind the public of some school zone safety tips that help to ensure both motorists and pedestrians stay safe.

  • The speed limit in school zones is 30 km/hr. Several speeding tickets are issued within the City of Airdrie school zones.
  • Always pay attention to the road, not your phone!
  • Be patient for the children using crosswalks. Most children cannot walk as quickly as an adult and they’re sometimes oblivious to vehicles on the road.
  • Always cross at crosswalks! Airdrie RCMP observe jaywalking daily; sometimes children on their own and sometimes children walking with an adult. This is an unsafe and illegal shortcut to be teaching our youth. Take the extra couple of seconds to walk to an intersection and use a crosswalk.
  • Abide by all “No Parking” signs. Recent snow build-up on streets has made parking difficult. Park a fair distance away from the school where there are numerous spots and walk your children to the school safely. Making use of the numerous community paths is also helpful.
  • Park legally prior to letting your little scholars out of the car. Stopping in the middle of the street to let them out is unsafe and impedes traffic flow.
  • U-turns are illegal in school zones. In fact, U-turns are virtually illegal at most intersections as well.
  • Please take the time to properly clear all your windows and mirrors of snow and ice. Pedestrians need to be able to make eye contact with motorists just as motorists have to be able to see pedestrians. Driving with obscured windows is an offence under the Use of Highway and Rules of the Road Regulation.
  • Be patient in general. School drop-offs in the morning and afternoon are very busy times. There are numerous vehicles within school zones at this time and this results in traffic congestion. Traffic will move slowly so be patient with other motorists and pedestrians alike. This happens every school day so prepare for it.

Airdrie RCMP and Airdrie Municipal Enforcement will be out patrolling school zones and looking to ensure motorists and pedestrians are keeping safe. Please do your part to help keep our communities safe.
