2012 Skills Canada Alberta Information

You and your students are invited to attend the many technology and trade programs this year including the Regional Skills Canada Competitions; the Provincial Skills Canada Competition; School tours of Skill City and Try a Trade; the valuable Girls Exploring Trades and Technology Conference as well as PL opportunities for teachers on Provincial Technical Committees. Schools are encouraged to register as a Skills School to receive information on lastest programs, events, scholarships and funding opportunities.

Bring the 'Spoken Word Poetry' to your Classroom!

The Spoken Word Festival is bringing the best SLAM and SPOKEN WORD artists to come and visit your school. This opportunity is for grades 7-12 students and their teachers. Presentations include a reading and/or poetry workshop. Artist availability is from Tuesday April 17 - Friday April 20, 2012.

2012 Canada Day Poster Challenge

Each year, students aged 5 to 18 are invited to take part in the Canada Day Poster Challenge by designing a poster that illustrates their pride in Canada and in being Canadian. This year’s theme is 1812: The Fight for Canada. Note the deadline for submitting your poster, along with an entry form, is March 9, 2012.

Grades 5-8: National Student Banner Contest 2012

The National Capital Commission (NCC), in partnership with Classroom Connections, is running an amazing cross-Canada contest and public art project. Students in Grades 5 through 8 are being asked to create and submit a one-of-a-kind banner design to the “Raise Your Voices!” National Student Banner Contest. The design should represent an issue or topic of importance to Canadian youth. Submission deadline is February 17, 2012.

New online material will help teachers and students to better appreciate and understand the contributions of Alberta’s First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) peoples. This information, Walking Together: First Nations, Métis and Inuit Perspectives in Curriculum, was developed by education experts, elders and respected knowledge keepers from FNMI peoples within the province.

Power4Bones (P4B) - Free Bone-Health Program for Grade 5

Power4Bones is a FREE, award-winning program that teaches grade 5 children about bone health using an incredible variety of coordinated teaching methods, including Web-based challenges, educational comics, coded secret messages, classroom announcements, a public service announcement activity and much more. Olli's ALL-STARS Program - Grades 7-12

The Calgary Educational Partnership Foundation, the Calgary Flames and Olli Jokinen would like to hear about acts of heroism and kindness by students that take place in your school. The program, named Olli’s All Stars, is focused on creating a positive school environment and is open for students in grades seven through twelve. Deadline for entries for the 2011/2012 Flames season is March 1st, 2012.

Epilepsy Education Sessions and School Kits

Some people think that epilepsy – a neurological condition characterized by seizures – is a rare condition. However, approximately 20,000 Calgarians live with epilepsy. Since 75% of all cases of epilepsy are diagnosed in people under the age of 21, the chances that a seizure will happen at school are substantial. The Epilepsy Association of Calgary offers a number of services free of charge.

Classroom Agriculture Program (CAP) Grade 4 Program

The Classroom Agriculture Program (CAP) teaches students about the importance of agriculture in their every day lives. CAP is a free one hour, in class presentation. It is available to grade four classes in Alberta. It is delivered by volunteers with a background, education or experience in agriculture. Program registration occurs between October and December. Deadline for registration is December 9, 2011. The Program is delivered between February and June each year.

Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Essay Contest

This contest is open to all Grade 6 students in Alberta. The grand prize winners will be invited by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly to an award presentation event in the Legislature Building in Edmonton and receive a plaque and a cheque in the amount of 1st place $200, 2nd place $75, and 3rd place $50. Essays must be submitted to the Office of the Speaker on or before Wednesday, February 29, 2012.

Glenbow Museum's school programs enrich the learning opportunities for Alberta students from Kindergarten to Grade 12.The educational programs support students in learning about the history of their region while also broadening their horizons through international exhibitions and programs. Over 55,000 school children participate in Glenbow Museum's school programs annually.
