Epilepsy Education Sessions and School Kits
Some people think that epilepsy – a neurological condition characterized by seizures – is a rare condition. However, approximately 20,000 Calgarians live with epilepsy. Since 75% of all cases of epilepsy are diagnosed in people under the age of 21, the chances that a seizure will happen at school are substantial. The Epilepsy Association of Calgary offers a number of services free of charge.
EPILEPSY…Won't stop us from dancing through life!
Meet two Calgary twins, Chloe and Lainey who were both diagnosed with epilepsy a few years ago. The Epilepsy Association was inspired by their ability to 'keep on dancing' even though their seizures could have so easily prevented them from going on. In explaining seizures, Chloe and Lainey were told that seizures are "the most beautiful pictures of fireworks" in their brains. As a result of the incredible support of their parents, Chole and Lainey have learned to handle their epilepsy with grace and determination, despite the challenges it brings. We thought this was a message worth sharing!

One way that you can support those with epilepsy is to ensure your staff and students know about epilepsy and how to help. I have enclosed a poster which I hope you will display. Additional copies are available on request. Additionally, the Epilepsy Association of Calgary offers a number of services free of charge to help you make a difference. These include:
• The Adventures of Crashman – an “edutaining” one man play chronicling the experiences of Bill, who was diagnosed with epilepsy as a young boy. The successes in Bill’s life are inspiring to all and show that with the support of others it is possible to achieve your dreams!
• Opening the Door to Understanding – The Epilepsy School Kit – A resource manual and DVD for teachers and support staff. The kit can stand alone, or can be provided in conjunction with an Epilepsy Education Session. (There is no charge for kit, but the cost to have it mailed is $5.00).
• Epilepsy Education Sessions – Custom designed, age appropriate sessions that cover the basics of epilepsy, seizure recognition and first aid procedures. These sessions promote social acceptance and understanding for people living with epilepsy. These sessions can also address specific needs or concerns of the group.
