2012-2013 Shara Masiuk: iPads Supporting Learning in Gr 1-2

Research Question: How can sharing of understanding using digital technology support metacognition?

“If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow.”

John Dewey

Why?

Improve Student Learning
To encourage students to creatively contribute to, and share their learning.
At Banded Peak School we are encouraging our students’ learning by driving inquiry and further study to create
opportunities for reflection and metacognitive thinking. By doing so, we want to develop a community of life-long
learners.
Teachers typically take a generative and collaborative approach with their community of learners, to create and
deliver meaningful and authentic learning aligned with their students needs. This requires teachers to learn new
technologies, create multimedia lessons/projects, and offer digital learning opportunities to their students.

Currently, I am the producer of the classroom blog (Teacher as Multimedia Producer, see diagram). I am the photographer and videographer and I make the slideshows and iMovies that are uploaded. The class collaboratively, reflects on each entry. There are multiple skills/concepts that my students are developing as a result of partaking in the blog (by being recorded explaining concepts, reflecting on the class projects etc). But, this Innovative Technologies Grant Proposal, should it be granted, will place more accountability on students for their own learning, by providing the technology so that they may produce and deliver multimedia to demonstrate their learning, share it on the class wiki to reflect on their ideas. This will encourage them to be multimedia evaluators, content creators and ultimately be given the opportunity to understand how they may influence the world they live in.

“He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.”

Friedrich Nietzsche

How?

Innovative Learning Strategies

To integrate leading edge technology for young learners.

Students would be able to access iPads to demonstrate their learning. Students may show that they have mastery of a concept by: podcasting; using iMovie or slideshow or ibook for digital storytelling; creating a diagram; poster; making an iPhoto journal; recording vocals or instruments on garageband; using drop box for photos; producing comic strips on Strip Designer; using Avid Studio to make a video; or, even a stop motion film on Smoovie. This would then be shared through the Apple wiki to further develop a home to school connection and provide the opportunity for parent commentary and further student reflection.

“Children must be taught how to think, not what to think.”

Margaret Mead

What?

Technologies for Learning

To provide access to digital technology.

This proposal is to request 12 iPads, in a child-friendly case (iGuy), with licenses for pcpremote for access to AppleWiki/Blog on the RVS server, microphones and additional monies for software/apps and licenses. Use of iPads with young children has proven to be effective because of the ease of the touch screen technology, portability, wide range of applications for children and simplified login procedure. Rocky View Schools subscribe to Apple technology and students are already familiar with the technology making them an easy transition as a learning tool. Maintenance and upkeep would be included in our total maintenance program for IT. iGuy cases are easy for young children to manipulate as they use ‘two hand’ manipulation for picture taking and video production. They would be less vulnerable to damage due to the soft casing. They stand easily for students to watch the screen. iPads which are readily available (rather that having to sign them out and use them for a specific period of time) allows for extended use.

“Teachers need to integrate technology seamlessly into the curriculum instead of viewing it as an add-on, an after thought, or an event.”

Heidi-Hayes Jacobs

Professional Learning Connections

This Innovative Technology Grant Proposal clearly aligns with the Professional Learning Model on all the attributes oflearning. I will be sharing with and collaborating on my own Professional learning in a few different ways. For the past two years, I have been a member of the Wiki and Blog Community of Practice where collaborating and sharing of ideas and projects has supported and advanced my practice. This year I have been invited to present a session about Blogs and Wiki’s, to a different Community of Practice during the second Rocky View PL day. It is called Utilizing Current Technologies’. Additionally, Banded Peak Staff has embarked on a study of the AISI action research question: ‘To what extent does the learning environment impact student learning?’ I will be best able to delve into an inquiry around this action research question should this proposal be accepted. Furthermore, Banded Peak administration will provide four afternoons of substitute costs for a group of up to three teachers so that I may share my learning around this innovative technology so that they may integrate it into their practice as well.
