Kindergarten in Rocky View Schools

Rocky View Schools is once again participating in the Early Child Development Mapping Project. This project involves kindergarten teachers completing the Early Development Instrument (EDI) on every child in RVS.

This year, Rocky View Schools is once again participating in the 5-year Alberta Education funded research project (the Early Child Development Mapping Project) that will involve every school authority in the province. This project involves kindergarten teachers completing the Early Development Instrument (EDI) on every child in RVS.

The Early Development Instrument (EDI) is an outcomes based measure of children’s early development, measuring children’s readiness to learn within the school environment  The developmental benchmarks measured by the EDI include 5 domains: physical health and well-being; social competence; emotional maturity; language and cognitive development; and communication and general knowledge.

This instrument is part of the Early Child Development (ECD) Mapping Project which utilizes these EDI measures in conjunction with information gathered about family and community factors and local programs and services that influence children’s development. The goal of the ECD is to be able to map out what each community’s services should look like in order to best meet the unique needs of each mapped community. At the conclusion of the project, Rocky View Schools will have a clear picture of the services required in the different communities across RVS to ensure our children are entering school with the best advantage possible.

This Alberta Education funded research project is a 5-year project engaging every school authority in the province. RVS has agreed to begin this process during the 2009/10 school year and will therefore complete the EDI in the spring of 2010 and then again in 2012. This project was first initiated in Alberta during the 2008/09 school year with only a select number of school jurisdictions participating. Elsewhere in Canada, this mapping project has been in place in Manitoba since 1998, in British Columbia since 1999 and in Ontario since 2000 . Many beneficial community and/or school based programs have been developed in these provinces based on the information gathered through the mapping. We are looking forward to this process of discovery in our school jurisdiction and the exciting programs that will surface as a result of this project.
