RVS' Healthy Eating Initiative

About RVS' Healthy Eating Initiative

nullRocky View Schools recognizes that healthy eating is an important part of growth and development and contributes to student learning. As such, RVS supports success in students by promoting the Alberta Nutrition Guidelines to assist in creating an environment that provides and promotes healthy food choices and healthy attitudes about food in all schools.  Find this information: Healthy Eating Guidelines

Through partnerships with Alberta Health Services, Health Promoting Schools (HPS), Everactive Schools, and the Joint Consortium for School Health (JCSH), RVS has made much progress toward the support of healthier eating in schools. Of special note is the partnership which emerged with Devon Energy. In 2008, Devon Energy provided funds to allow the purchase of equipment required to begin and sustain Healthy Eating in 20 RVS schools. The impact of Devon Energy’s generosity was pivotal to the success of the project.

Local community partnerships too have been successful for many years in RVS communities. The Airdrie Food Bank is one example of a community partnership that has been providing a breakfast program for RJ Hawkey School in Airdrie since 1998. The Airdrie Food Bank also supplies and delivers over 20,000 snack items each school year as part of the Snack Attack program to 20 RVS area schools!

Food For Thought is a non-profit organization, fully funded by grants, donations, volunteers, and in-kind services. (14) full-time breakfast programs and (9) modified breakfast and snack programs have successfully been implemented since 2010!
