Education Plan

2011-2014 — School Education Plan

Quotes from Parent Advocates

In a dialogue with School Council (17 May, 2011) the following was expressed:
George Mac is so inviting.
Our school is positive.
The school's got heart.
I like the sense of family and support.

“What makes George McDougall High School such a special place is the people...the Teachers, Administrators, Support Staff, Coaches, Peers and Parents. My boys entered the school immature children, and are exiting mature responsible young men. I hold enormous gratitude to every person who has touched my children's lives in a special way and made them who they are today.”

How do we define success for George McDougall students?

As we look to define "success" for our students, we draw some of our measures from the RVS Three Year Plan and our own school motto of "Success Through Effort". We look to describe our students' success in their acquisition of 21 st Century Skills (creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, innovation, financial literacy, self-directed). We know our students are successful as they strive to acquire, develop and master these skills. Civic engagement is also a corner stone characteristic we value as an indicator of success. When students master these skills, they will be successful in any of their future academic and employment. We see a direct correlation between academic success and the acquisition of these 21 st Century Skills.

What makes our school good and how do we know?

We have many indicators that show us that we are a "good" school. Over the past three years, significant gains have been made in APORI measures of reducing the drop out rates and increasing the number of students attaining the "level of excellence" on provincial assessments. Our dedicated professional staff focus on instructional practices that promote academic excellence and encourages our students to pursue their learning beyond a high school diploma. This makes us a good school. We have also been successful at implementing a number of unique programs that meet the diverse learning needs of our students. By expanding our Pre-AP English courses to grade 10 this year and with the introduction of Knowledge and Employability programs, we can ensure that students can have their individual learning needs met. As we look to next year, we will be expanding our support to offer "Read 180" to support students with literacy challenges. We are confident that providing exceptional instruction and support makes us a "good school". Another key indicator is the amount of involvement of our students, staff and parents in civic initiatives from Students 4 Change, ALS fundraisers, Japanese Relief Fundraisers to the overwhelming support for our inaugural "Ride of the Mustangs" 48 hour bike-a-thon for cancer research, our school community values civic involvement and good citizenship not only by the words we use to promote such initiatives, but by rolling up our sleeves, working hard, and living our commitment with actions. This makes us a good school.
