How do we define success for Indus students? At Indus School, success comes by following ROARS (Respect, Ownership, Attitude, Responsibility, & Safety). Students who display these qualities are successful not only in school, but in all aspects of their lives. Demonstrating respect for one‟s self and others, ownership for one‟s learning and actions, a positive attitude, taking responsibility to make one‟s life and the world a better place, and ensuring the safety of all at the school, is both success in itself and the pathway to success in any pursuit. Our purpose is to build in students a strong multifaceted foundation for life. ROARS is the footing of that foundation. What makes our school good and how do we know?Any school is, by definition, a place of personal growth. A school where students make progress toward their personal, and the school‟s collective goals, is a good school. At Indus School we see that growth every day. From learning to read, to developing conflict resolution skills, to clarifying and sharing an original idea, student growth is infused in every minute of every day of the year. We see clear evidence of academic progress in our Provincial Achievement Results, where we have 87% of our students meeting or exceeding the acceptable standard (10% more than the provincial average). Staff members, too, are growing and learning every day, adding to their repertoire of skills. All of our teachers have participated in our AISI project on assessment as a tool for learning and reporting, and our entire staff has participated in the Communities of Practice and Professional Learning days. Being able to bring new strategies such as the use of interactive whiteboards has been a positive result of our professional learning. A final testament to our school comes from the most basic of all measures: do students want to be at Indus School? While it would be naive to believe every student is overjoyed to arrive at school every day, over 23% of our students come from outside of our "catchment‟ area. They have chosen to attend our school. |
