On May 27, Northcott Prairie School in Airdrie celebrated its grand opening with a ceremony attended by students, staff, school council, and special guests along with Rocky View Schools (RVS) trustees, MLA Peter Guthrie and divisional staff.
“Today’s ceremony is long-overdue, and we’re excited to celebrate this occasion with the Northcott Prairie School community,” said Board Chair, Fiona Gilbert. “Since opening, staff and students have united into a vibrant positive community with a distinct identity that they were able to officially commemorate together.”
The ceremony included contributions from classes across the school, including student artwork and band performances. Plaques were presented to the school by Alberta Education and the division. Student ambassadors also gave tours of the bright and beautiful school to dignitaries and special guests.
“I’m thrilled that our Bison Herd was able to come together today to commemorate the opening of our school,” said Acting Principal, Devon Sawby. “Today’s ceremony was an uplifting celebration of just how much our students and staff have already accomplished and an opportunity for them to share pride in their school together.”
Northcott Prairie School serves approximately 760 students in southwest Airdrie. It was named to pay homage to two distinct Northcott families who have lived in the Airdrie region since the early 1900s, while also evoking the history and environment of the school’s location.
“Alberta’s schools have long been, and continue to be, a gathering place for friends and neighbours. This is an investment we are proud to make in our students, in our communities and in our future,” said MLA for Airdrie-Cochrane, Peter Guthrie. “Northcott Prairie is a state-of-the-art facility and a wonderful place to learn and teach. I want to take a moment to applaud RVS for its vision and for putting students first.”
Construction of the facility was approved in 2017 and the building has been occupied since 2020; however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the school community has been unable to commemorate the opening of the school until now.
