Giving Back During COVID-19

"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'" Mr. Rogers

How Can You Support Others?

In Rocky View Schools (RVS), students are taught they have the capacity to make a difference. During this global pandemic, it's more important than ever that as adults, we model this behaviour for students - we can't just talk the talk; we also must walk the walk. Although social distancing may have temporarily changed the face of volunteering, there are plenty of ways to support not only those organizations who serve our community's most vulnerable groups, but also our friends, families and neighbours who may be facing their own challenges given this new reality.

This page is meant to provide suggestions for giving back at the local, provincial and national level, whether it be through monetary donations or volunteering in person or virtually. Not only does every little bit help, but you'll also be enhancing your own well-being! According to researchers at the Mayo Clinic, reflecting on time spent in service to others can create a sense of meaning and appreciation, which can have a stress-reducing effect.

This is in no way meant to be a comprehensive list; additional volunteering opportunities can be sent to Manager of Communications Sarah McNab for promotion on this site.

Enhance Connections Between Coworkers

Although videoconferencing applications are helping to bridge the gap from a professional perspective, it is essential that we find ways to maintain personal connections during social distancing to increase morale and reduce the collective anxiety. If you're a staff member interested in hosting a virtual activity (think yoga, guided meditation, paint night, photography lesson, etc.), contact the Communications Branch to promote your event.

Lend a Hand Locally

Help build strong communities

It’s been heartwarming to see how so many communities have come together to promote positivity and create a sense of comfort. Those looking to lend a hand locally are encouraged to check in with their community associations, as many have implemented initiatives aimed at supporting residents, including assistance with yard work, grocery pick-up, meal preparation/delivery, dog walking and more.

Support a local food bank

Local food banks have expressed an even greater need than normal for supplies. When you place your grocery order, why not add a few extras to your cart or consider making a monetary donation? Check your local food banks for details on urgent needs and drop-off procedures.

Link up with a local non-profit

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, non-profit organizations are still in need of volunteers, donations or supplies. See how you can lend your support.

Thank essential service workers

There are countless businesses that have implemented initiatives to thank those on the frontlines who are working tirelessly to keep our communities running safely and contain the spread of COVID-19. Next time you’re craving takeout, considering placing an order with Freshii and adding a $10 donation to your tab. Freshii will use this donation to prepare and deliver a healthy meal to energize a frontline worker in your community. This is just one of many ways to show your gratitude!

Spread kindness via social media

Alberta's own Chief Medical Officer of Health Deena Hinshaw has called on Albertans to share acts of kindness that they have experienced in the community using #AlbertaCares. Stories shared using this or another local community hashtag can help raise spirits, reduce anxiety and promote optimism! Alternatively, there are a number of local Facebook groups that have been established to help connect individuals.
