The Evolution of the Art and Science of Teaching

Our Approach to Teaching & Learning

  1. Focus: Teaching begins by focusing the learning intent to develop learner competencies and learner outcomes aligned with Alberta Education programs of study. This is done collaboratively by teachers and students, so they have a clear understanding of the goal of learning.
  2. Design: The second step is designing. Teachers use the principles of Understanding by Design, Universal Learning Environments, and Blended learning to build inclusive Universal Learning Environments. At the instructional level, they use the RVS Instructional Design Framework to develop inquiry and project-based learning experiences. Teachers involve students in designing learning through development of a learning plan, which includes a learner profile, learning goals, learner portfolios, and specialized support plans as required.
  3. Engage: The third step involves coaching, mentoring, guiding, and instructing to support students through the inquiry and project-based learning experiences. Teachers at RVS also are engaged in their own ongoing professional learning using tools such as the communities of practice and collaborative action research.
  4. Assess: The fourth step is not the end of a sequence, but pervades the entire process from goal-setting through active learning. This is ongoing balanced assessment, emphasizing formative assessment both for and as learning as well as summative assessment of learning. Students are partners in assessment and parents are engaged through online tools such as Mahara, MyDesign, as well as in face-to-face meetings and reports.
