Aug. 28, 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Thank you for sharing your intention with Rocky View Schools (RVS) about your child(ren)’s education for the 2020/2021 school year.

We are excited to welcome back approximately 85 per cent of RVS students to in-person classes, just over 11.5 per cent to RVS Online Learning and about 1 per cent to RVS’ homeschooling option this September. With over 3,000 students choosing the online offering, RVS is working through the process to shift over 100 teachers to online and reconfigure most in-class homerooms. Class sizes for both online and in-person will be similar.

We have a few updates for you on in-class, RVS Online Learning and homeschooling.

In-class Schooling
By the end of today, all principals will have reached out to families to let them know how staggered entry on Sept. 2, 3 and 4 will work for your child(ren) and information about school operations, as well as which cohort your child(ren) will be part of if we are required to move into Scenario 2 – Blended Learning. This should help ease students back into their school and adjust to the changes put in place for their protection.

RVS Online Learning
In addition to approximately eight or nine online homerooms per grade, we are excited to be able to offer French Immersion at all grade levels (grade 1 – 12) and faith-based programing grades 1 – 9 through RVS Online Learning. Families will receive information about the online offering from their school by the middle of next week. Your contact for RVS Online Learning remains your child(ren)’s regular school. Teachers will be assigned to the online classes by Sept. 4. The first day of classes for RVS Online Learning students is Sept. 8.

Homeschooling
Families will receive information on how to register for RVS homeschooling by the middle of next week. It will provide detailed instructions on next steps in the process.

We appreciate that the decision to send your child(ren) to school or have them learn at home was difficult for some parents. RVS wants to reassure you that your child(ren)’s education, safety and well-being continues to be at the heart of everything we do. We are confident in our quality RVS Online Learning offering and that students in the classroom will be protected through the measures established in our School Re-Entry Plan and with the cooperation of all RVS staff, students and families.

As you prepare for your child(ren)’s first day of school, we have provided a tip sheet of strategies to consider. We would also like to point you to our parent Q&A and the school re-entry resources recently provided by the Government of Alberta.

We wish you and your family a healthy, happy and successful 2020/2021 school year and we look forward to being a part of that through your child(ren)’s education.

Sincerely,

Fiona Gilbert               Greg Luterbach
