Trustees Identify Key Budget Priorities for 2020/21

Following the jurisdiction's Phase 1 Budget Priorities Survey, Rocky View Schools Board of Trustees approved its budget priorities for the upcoming school year.

Budget Priorities and Second Survey

At its March 5, 2020, public meeting, Rocky View Schools (RVS) Board of Trustees established budget priorities to guide the development of its 2020/21 budget.

RVS' annual budget is driven by the goals and strategies of its Four Year Plan to foster innovators in their learning journey, while addressing the operational needs of the jurisdiction. Recognizing that the Superintendent will demonstrate fiscal responsibility by continuing to pursue efficient and effective services, the Board of Trustees has identified the following key priorities to guide the 2020/21 budget process:

  • Student success through direct funding to classrooms;
  • School-based supports for students with complex needs;
  • Wellness supports; and
  • Literacy and numeracy skill development.

Board Chair Fiona Gilbert stated, "Across all surveys, stakeholders asked that the board find cost savings outside of the classroom wherever possible to minimize the impact to class sizes and supports for students with complex needs."

From March 10 to 30, 2020, RVS will administer a second budget survey, which outlines a variety of cost saving ideas and potential revenue sources. The questions being asked were shaped by the recent provincial budget, as well as feedback received through the first budget priorities survey. Parents are encouraged to voice their opinion by participating in the survey.

Results from this survey will be released, May 21, 2020, as the Board prepares to deliberate and approve a balanced budget to government by May 31, 2020.

Take the survey now.
