Kids Write 4 Kids - Gr 4-8

Short Story Writing Contest. Deadline March 31, 2019. Enter the 7th Annual Kids Write 4 Kids writing contest! The winning story will be published at Amazon, Apple iBookstore, Google Play, and Overdrive for the world to read. Net proceeds from these book sales will be donated to the winner's charity of choice. In addition, the winner will be part of the judging panel for the following year’s contest.

Kids Write 4 Kids (KW4K) gives us, at the Ripple Foundation, the opportunity to give back to our community, but it also creates a chance for participants to give back to theirs: The net proceeds from the sale of all KW4K books at Amazon, Apple iBookstore, Google Play and Overdrive during 2019 will be donated to the winners’ charity of choice.  In addition, winner will be part of the judging panel for the following year’s contest.

Submission Form

Entry Details

  • Open to Canadian residents only
  • Students must be in grades 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8
  • Stories must be original and written entirely by the author
  • Only one entry per author will be accepted; all subsequent entries will be disqualified
  • Only single author stories qualify (no co-authored stories)
  • Stories are accepted in English only
  • Stories can be fact or fiction, prose or poetry
  • There are no entry fee and no purchase is necessary
  • Only online entries will be accepted
  • All entries must review the story checklist

Word Count

  • Maximum word count: 7,500 words
  • The word count includes “a,” “an,” and “the,” but not the words on non-story pages such as the title page or those captions for illustrations or photography
  • Invented spelling is accepted

File Format and Submission

  • Text must be typed and submitted as DOC file format (parents/guardian can assist with inputting the story)
  • Do not submit any images. If your story does have images and your story is selected, a representative from Ripple Foundation will contact you to obtain original images.


  • The Submission (s) receiving the highest score will be published in a professional e-book by RIPPLE
  • Ripple will be responsible for all costs associated with production of the e-book and marketing of the e-book. The type and extent of Marketing activities for the e-book will be at the sole discretion of Ripple
  • e-book will be made available for sale at Amazon, Apple iBookstore, Google Play, and Overdrive.
  • Net proceeds for calendar year 2019 from all KW4K book sales from Amazon, Apple iBookstore, Google Play, and Overdrive of this contest and the continued sales (if any) of e-books that were the winning submissions in prior year KW4K contests, will be donated to the author’s charity of choice. If more than one Entry is selected, the net proceeds will be divided equally among the authors and each author will donate the amount to their charity of choice. The charity must be an official registered charity in Canada.
  • Net proceeds from the sales of the e-books from Amazon, Apple iBookstore, Google Play, and Overdrive will be calculated after the 2019 year end, and proceeds donated in the Spring of 2020. The value of the donation will depend upon the number of KW4K books sold in 2019.
