Prairie Proud: Kathryn School Digs Into Its Farming Roots
Posted on
Located on fertile prairie, Kathyrn is a close-knit farming community with a strong local agricultural industry. Inspiring and educating the future generation is the driving force behind special events at Kathyrn School – like Aggie Day which allows students to explore the many opportunities available in the agricultural field. Students from Kindergarten – Grade 8 participate in Aggie Day with K – 8 students from Beiseker Community School invited to join in.
Teacher Jodie Hassett and students Quill and Miriam presented to the Board of Trustees of Rocky View Schools (RVS) on May 22 about Aggie Day and the other agricultural events organized by Kathyrn School. Some of the things Quill and Miriam said they found most impactful and informative at the last Aggie Day in 2024 were visits from the Alberta Birds of Prey Nature Centre, students from the University of Calgary Veterinary Medicine program, a local veterinarian and a beekeeper.
Quill and Miriam said students learned how to administer livestock injections, wrap a broken bone and sampled local honey and produce. They also explored modern agricultural tools and equipment, gaining insights into the many roles within Alberta’s dynamic agricultural sector.
Students take home swag bags filled with fun and educational items from community partners, helping them remember the day long after it ends.
Hassett said agricultural education at Kathryn School has several important goals: creating connections between two rural communities and encouraging collaboration amongst the students and their families; providing hands-on learning by engaging students in interactive activities; exploring the many opportunities available to students who decide they are interested in a career in farming and agriculture; encouraging curiosity and engagement by involving the students in problem-solving activities; and, celebrating local heritage, helping students to take pride in their communities while learning how important a role agriculture plays in the area.
Aggie Day is organized by a dedicated committee of parents and teachers and enjoys the support of numerous local businesses and organizations. To maintain the event’s high quality and allow time to bring in fresh vendors and ideas, the school has moved to hosting Aggie Day every other year. In alternating years, smaller agriculture-themed events continue to bring agriculture-based learning into the classroom. Farm safety is an important topic that is highlighted both at Aggie Day and was the focus of this year’s event.
Agriculture education at Kathyrn School highlights the important work the industry does every day for all Albertans and perhaps will inspire the next generation to keep these important traditions and ways of life alive and thriving.
