Five Additional Modulars Approved for RVS to Provide Some Much-needed Space Relief

Posted on

Rocky View Schools (RVS) is pleased to announce the Government of Alberta has recognized the division’s urgent need for additional space for students and approved five more modular classrooms through its in-year modular funding program.

“RVS appreciates the government’s continued commitment to addressing our overcrowded schools,” said Board Chair, Fiona Gilbert. “These five additional modular classrooms to go along with the five new, plus one washroom relocation, approved earlier this spring will help us better serve our students while we wait for new schools to be built.”

Modular classrooms provide a critical short-term solution to help alleviate pressure in full schools.  With new school construction typically taking two to three years to complete after full construction funding is approved by the province, continued investment in modular learning spaces is essential to meeting the immediate space needs of RVS’ rapidly growing student population.

RVS prioritizes modular classroom placements at schools experiencing the most urgent overcrowding and projected enrolment growth. Placement decisions are guided by enrolment projections, site suitability and the division’s long-term capital planning, including the anticipated opening of new schools.

RVS anticipates these newly approved modular classrooms to be ready by spring 2026 and plans to place them at the following schools:

  • École Edwards Elementary School (Airdrie) – two modular classrooms
  • Ralph McCall School (Airdrie) – two modular classrooms
  • Rainbow Creek Elementary School (Chestermere) – one modular classroom

These are in addition to the five previously approved modular classrooms and one washroom unit, which are expected to be ready for occupancy by late fall 2025 at:

  • Nose Creek Elementary School (Airdrie) – four modular classrooms
  • Rainbow Creek Elementary School (Chestermere) – one modular classroom and one washroom unit

“We have long advocated for new schools and modular classrooms,” said Gilbert. “We are encouraged that the voices of our families and communities are being heard. These in-year modular approvals are an important step forward for RVS.”

More information about the seven new school projects announced in Budget 2024 and 2025, along with how RVS plans student spaces is available on the New Schools, Modernizations and Expansions webpage.
