Previous Updates

An Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) strike begins tomorrow, Oct. 6, 2025. All schools, including online, are closed until further notice. Do not send your child to school or to the bus stop tomorrow.

On Oct. 2 we shared important strike information via email and on our website. We have since updated information regarding access to online platforms. Students will now continue to have access to these platforms, such as Moodle and Google Classroom. There is no expectation students are engaging in at-home learning during the strike. There will be no teacher supervision, guidance or instructional support during the strike or expectation for teachers to review or grade work submitted online during that time.

  • Student Belongings: Students are encouraged to take personal belongings home by the end of the school day on Oct. 3.
  • (UPDATED) Online Learning: A decision has been made to continue to provide students with access to RVS learning platforms. Use is at the discretion of parents/guardians. There is no expectation students are engaging in at-home learning during the strike. • Government Learning Resources and Funding: Parents and guardians can access optional Parent Toolkits and Supplementary Resources provided by the government. There is no expectation for parents/guardians and students to engage in at-home learning during the strike. Funding may also be available for parents/guardians. Today, the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA), which represents teachers and school administrators across the province, announced the ATA voted 89.5 per cent against accepting the agreement presented in provincial negotiations. This allows a strike to proceed on Oct. 6, 2025.

A general strike means that teachers and school administrators are required to stop all services and leave RVS facilities. All RVS schools and programs including online would close. Access to the school would not be available to students, families or the community. School offices would respond to school-based questions by email. School offices would not be able to provide information from teachers and/or administrators during a general strike.

Additional information is provided below.

The Teachers’ Employers Bargaining Association (TEBA) announced TEBA and the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) have reached a tentative agreement in provincial negotiations. TEBA and the ATA will enter a ratification process to vote on the proposed agreement. A final decision on the tentative agreement will be made no later than Oct. 1, 2025, based on the outcome of the votes.

RVS is hopeful a settlement can be reached. As the ATA’s strike notice remains in effect, we continue to prepare for a potential strike and are ready to implement contingency plans if needed.

For now, there is no change to RVS operations.

Please continue to watch for updates on our Labour Action webpage and other communication channels as required.

Posted: Sept. 12, 2025

The Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) provided formal notice to begin labour action on Oct. 6, 2025, at 12:01 a.m., if a settlement is not reached before that date. The notice given by the ATA is a general strike impacting all Alberta school divisions. A general strike means that teachers and school administrators are required to stop all services and leave RVS facilities. Schools will be closed for all students.

For now, there is no disruption to learning or any changes to normal operations. All RVS schools and facilities remain open, and classes and planned activities are continuing as normal. Community use continues to be available for booking RVS facilities.

We remain hopeful that the provincial government and the ATA reach a negotiated settlement soon. We are committed to keeping families and staff informed and will share updates through our website, email and other communication channels as more information becomes available.

ATA Announcement

The Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) announced that they may begin strike action on Oct. 6, 2025, if a settlement is not reached before that date. The ATA has not provided details about what strike action might look like.

The ATA’s announcement is not an official legal strike notice. No legal strike notice has been issued to the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA).

TEBA Lockout Vote

For now, there is no disruption to learning or any changes to normal operations. All RVS schools and facilities remain open, and classes and planned activities are continuing as normal. Community use continues to be available for booking RVS facilities.

School boards have voted to provide the TEBA (Teachers’ Employers Bargaining Association) Board of Directors authority to engage in a lockout if necessary.

This vote provides Alberta school boards with the ability to protect students and communities if the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) initiates a work stoppage. It does not provide individual school boards with the authority to initiate a lockout. Negotiations between the ATA and the province continue.

RVS highly values all our 3,000+ staff and the contributions they make to student success. We respect the bargaining process and remain hopeful that the provincial government and the ATA reach a negotiated settlement. We are committed to keeping families and staff informed and will share updates through our website, email and other communication channels as more information becomes available.
