Literacy and Numeracy Blocks Build a Foundation of Support at Herons Crossing School
Posted onHerons Crossing School is one of many schools across RVS receiving additional support in literacy and numeracy, thanks to a Kindergarten to Grade 3 initiative designed to strengthen foundational learning for our youngest students.
A Sept. 18 presentation to the Board of Trustees showcased the successful implementation of the literacy and numeracy blocks initiative at Heron’s Crossing, integrating evidence-based instruction aligned with the Science of Reading and numeracy development research.
During the 2024/25 school year, RVS learning specialists embedded in 10 schools to support the rollout of the initiative. In their presentation, learning specialists Chelsea Schubert and Alida South highlighted how they provided common resources, diagnostic tools and collaborative professional learning that emphasized both prevention and intervention. Staff from Herons Crossing, including assistant principal Lisa Metcalfe and teachers Kerry Kindermann and Brandy Brochu, then discussed how this approach came to life in their school.
Assessment data clearly demonstrated the program's impact on student outcomes: the percentage of students requiring extra support in literacy and numeracy dropped dramatically from January to June 2025. For example, the number of Grade 3 students needing support decreased by 10 per cent. The overall growth in student confidence and skills was a key theme, as the program provided a solid foundation for their future academic success.
The success at Herons Crossing was a testament to the strong support provided to teachers from the learning specialists. With an additional funding boost for the program from the Board, the school was able to increase the time for its literacy and numeracy coaches, who then worked side-by-side with their colleagues. This hands-on approach included modeling lessons and co-teaching, which helped teachers build confidence and proficiency with the new frameworks.
The collaborative atmosphere created a strong professional community where teachers openly shared resources and best practices. This consistent, school-wide approach not only benefited teachers but also created a more predictable and supportive learning environment for students.
The literacy and numeracy support at Herons Crossing serves as a powerful example of how strategic investments in teaching and learning can directly lead to positive, tangible outcomes for students. The project directly supports goal one of the RVS Education Plan, advancing students’ numeracy and literacy skills.
