Numeracy and Literacy Interventions at RVS

Posted on

This is the second in a series of articles from Rocky View Schools regarding assessments. We hope this helps inform families on why, when and how RVS conducts assessments.

When students are assessed provincially, results are reported as intervention required/not required.

Interventions take many forms and look different from student to student and subject to subject. In achieving our vision of students achieving their absolute best, RVS teachers and specialists work to find out which types of interventions will best assist each student.

Literacy Interventions

RVS uses a combination of one-on-one and small group targeted literacy intervention, direct instruction and full class instruction to help students develop literacy skills. As each student learns differently, we provide a variety of strategies and approaches to help them on their learning journey.

The use of supporting resources such as Heggerty, Phonics Companion, Secret Stories, Words Their Way and resources through University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI) provide teachers with knowledge to deepen their literacy instruction to better support students. Including professionals such as learning specialists, speech language pathologists and occupational therapists to assist teachers with their practices also is beneficial. RVS also purchases resources for classroom teachers to use with students, ensuring adequate resources and supplies are available to implement the necessary literacy interventions.

Math Interventions

RVS ensures teachers and students have access to a wide range of resources in every classroom such as math manipulatives, numeracy-rich literature, digital platforms such as Mathology, math games and others to assist with math interventions.

These interventions could also include teachers building engaging opportunities for students to work more directly and authentically with their numeracy learning; students working in groups and individually using white boards to show their understanding; and students receiving small group intervention or one-on-one intervention to support math skill development.

The assessment of learning is focused on ensuring that students understand mathematical processes along with getting the right answer.

Concerned About Your Child’s Performance?

Please reach out to your classroom teacher if you have concerns about your student and their learning. Together you can identify ways for you to support your child using similar approaches and strategies that the classroom teacher is using. Being a united team in supporting your child offers them greater opportunities as we work together to ensure every child succeeds.

Land Acknowledgment

Rocky View Schools would like to acknowledge the land and recognize all the Indigenous Peoples whose footprints have marked these lands from time immemorial. Together, we can learn and honour the Ways of Knowing of Indigenous Peoples for all future generations.
