Staying Fit as a Family at Home

While being homebound and practicing social distancing, it's more important than ever to try and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Adding in a little exercise each day can be very beneficial for both the mind and body. Get the family together and get active!

Building Physical Activity into your Daily Schedule

With gyms closed and youth sports on hold, staying fit and healthy can be somewhat challenging - and this cold weather isn't helping either! However, research has shown that exercise can be an effective treatment for mild to moderate depression.

Staying fit at home is possible, even in the absence of gym equipment! Lay on a mat or the carpet and do some sit ups and push ups. Get a lower body workout in by doing squats or lunges. Get your heart rate up with some jumping jacks or just put on some music and dance like no one's watching! For those looking for a more mellow approach, follow a free yoga class on YouTube. The important thing is to make sure to carve out at least 30 to 45 mins of exercise daily. It doesn't have to be rigorous - constant movement and stretching are key.

Getting the kids involved and making it a family affair also can help you stick to a regular routine. When it's nice outside, go for a walk, while maintaining social distancing guidelines. If it's not so nice out, get the family stretching together or follow a free exercise program, like P.E. with Joe Wicks! Individuals with health and/or mobility issues should check with their health care provider before starting any exercise program.
