Parent Letter - Important Changes in RVS Schools and Facilities

Dear RVS Parents/Guardians, Rocky View Schools (RVS) wants to make you aware of important changes that will take place in all our schools and facilities soon.

In alignment with the Government of Alberta’s request of the school system, beginning Jan. 3, 2022, RVS will require proof of COVID-19 immunization or a negative rapid COVID-19 test result for all adults who are NOT RVS students to enter our schools or facilities. This is a necessary step to continue to keep the 26,600+ students in our care safe and in school, and to protect our 2,600+ staff.

RVS takes this decision very seriously. We have been thoughtful and thorough in our approach over the last three weeks to prepare Administrative Procedure 173 – COVID-19 Hazard Reduction. While aligned with similar procedures and policies created by other school divisions in Alberta, it provides a workable solution for RVS that offers multiple pathways.

We ask all parents/guardians, visitors, contractors, service providers, community use individuals/groups, practicum students, and staff to review the full administrative procedure.

Important Information from the Administrative Procedure for Parents/Guardians:

  • Date for the requirement is Jan. 3, 2022 – right after the winter break.
  • RVS students are NOT required to show proof of immunization or proof of a negative COVID-19 test.
  • The administrative procedure requires individuals 18 years or older who are NOT students in RVS to EITHER show proof of being fully immunized OR provide a recent negative COVID-19 rapid test result. A person is considered fully immunized after 14 days have passed since they received the second dose in a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine series.
  • Proof of COVID-19 immunization or a negative rapid test result is NOT required for individuals who are in the school/facility office briefly to drop off/pick up items or drop off/pick up children.
  • Proof of immunization will be demonstrated via the Government of Alberta’s QR code (available via, along with your ID.
  • Proof of negative COVID-19 test will need to be recorded in a written or printed copy that clearly outlines the type of test, the date and time of sample collection, a clear indication of a negative result and the laboratory that completed the test. Proof of rapid testing remains valid for 72 hours from the time and date of the test.
  • Visitors 18 years old or older who are not an RVS student attending sporting events, school concerts or school events on RVS property will need to demonstrate proof of immunization or proof of a negative COVID-19 rapid test.
  • This administrative procedure is temporary and will be re-evaluated when the government and medical authorities no longer support the identification of COVID-19 as a workplace hazard and/or a minimum of every six months, or as deemed necessary.
  • As we have done throughout the pandemic, remote options such as video conferencing and phone calls for parents to connect with teachers and administrators will continue to be offered.

Unfortunately, there continues to be different points of view on COVID-19 and related protective measures that are not always shared respectfully. We have clarified in the administrative procedure that RVS will not tolerate harassment, bullying nor discrimination based on an individual’s immunization status (or any other reason) among our students, staff, or school communities. Thank you for your cooperation as we work together to create a safe and positive learning environment for students.

I recognize this is not a welcomed requirement for some. We hope that the multiple pathways available to comply with the administrative procedure, as well as the availability to connect with RVS staff remotely will help. If you are not currently fully immunized, there is still enough time to get through that process prior to Jan. 3, 2022.

A copy of the full administrative procedure can be found at this link. We are continuing to develop the necessary processes to support this administrative procedure, but felt it was important to provide it to families and staff as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience as we move this important work forward. Please direct any questions to your school principal, recognizing there will be questions that they are unable to answer at this time.
