Promoting Literacy Through Chapbooks

Bringing Out the Writer in Students

Trustees congratulated Cochrane Christian Academy teacher Vicky Coverdale and her Gr. 5 students for their chapbooks projects. Vicky learned about chapbooks, which are small-sized books containing short stories, poems or ballads, at a Rocky View Schools Design Learning Day. Adopting the idea to promote literacy and develop a love for writing, Vicky had her entire class create a magazine on wetland animals and publish a book, which they titled, "The Day the Snowflake Blew In." The projects gave students the opportunity to tap into their creative side while exploring feelings, ideas and experiences.

Chapbooks proved to be a great way for classes to produce books inexpensively and in a short amount of time.
